The Bud Billiken Club was a social club for African–American youth in Chicago, Illinois, established in 1923, by the Chicago Defender founder Robert Sengstacke Abbott and its editor, Lucius Harper. The Bud Billiken Club was formed as part of the Defender Junior, the children's page in the newspaper, to encourage reading, appropriate social conduct, and involvement in the community, among the young people of Chicago.

The parade takes place every second Saturday in August. The parade has a historical namesake: a billiken is a charm doll given to children, a symbol of good luck and protection. Abbott merged the name with Bud, a character from the junior section of the The Billiken is a mythical good-luck figure who represents "things as they ought to be." Before he was Saint Louis University's mascot, he was a national sensation, a figure who was reproduced as dolls, marshmallow candies, metal banks, hatpins, pickle forks, belt buckles, auto-hood ornaments, salt and pepper shakers, bottles and more. The newspaper used to have a Bud Billiken club for children and Bud was the nickname of an editor at the Defender. The parade is the second Saturday in August.
